Around the World

God calls us to be “the light of the world” in Matthew 5:14, and to “live in peace with each other (1 Thessalonians 5:13).”  Each Sunday as we gather to worship together, we join in prayer for peace in our homes, our community, and in our world.  As we remember those in need in the world, we model Jesus as we “go into all the world (Mark 16:15).”

  •  Supporting Fair Trade through Equal Exchange is one of the ways we express our care for the world around us as a congregation.  We at PMC drink our theology, by serving only fair trade coffee from Equal Exchange at our church gatherings and coffeehouse!
  • Three or four times a year, Sunday school participants discuss current events and hot topics which encourage putting our faith in action.  Often these times of deliberate action lead to a time of letter writing, asking our local and national leaders to consider our viewpoints while making policy decisions.
  • In June, July and August, as school approaches, you will find many members of Perkasie Mennonite purchasing pencils by the dozen, notebooks by the hundreds, or crayons by the crate.  Sewing machines are humming as members sew beautiful patches of fabric into school bags.  In September, school supplies are packed into school kits and lovingly distributed to children worldwide through Mennonite Central Committee. In 2010, Perkasie Mennonite provided MCC with over 500 school kits.
  • Erica and Joel Smith are medical missionaries in Mexico.  Erica Frederick worshipped at PMC for several years while serving as a local nurse.  When she renewed her childhood friendship with Joey Smith, a physician living in Mexico, the church supported their marriage and continues to financially support their mission of providing medical help to those in need around them.  In February 2010 a group of eight, current and former members, traveled to Puebla, Mexico for a week to assist Erica and Joey with the medical needs of the village people in the Puebla area.  One member, a retired dentist, worked on dental needs.  Our offering projects went to purchase vitamins and medicines needed by the people. Persons who came for the medical/dental clinic were given clothing (from over 400 donated pieces), knitted shaws and Spanish New Testaments along with their medications, vitamins, toothbrushes and toothpaste.   Bible Stories were shared using flannel-graph that our congregation donated, and Frisbees that our children helped buy, were distributed to the children along with guidance on how to use them.  The women were shown how to make fabric folded stars over good fellowship.  The group shared about their service trip on March 14 with slides after a Taco fellowship meal.  The morning ended with the breaking of a piñata by our children.
